This historical fiction novel is set during the American Civil War and follows the two different stories---one of an enslaved African American couple in Louisiana and the other of a young Jewish couple in New York. The women both use sewing as a means to communicate with their loved ones and others during this difficult period. The couples’ lives ultimately converge as they all try to survive the war.
